In what is probably a rare move by Google, I believe a third-party Android app for a community web site called Reddit has been banned.
Interestingly while Android Play was considered to be often lax in its approach to what it stores, this time it seems the company have taken a pre-emptive strike.
However, what is wrong with Reddit is Fun, the app at the centre of the ban. From what I gather Android Play has accused it of being pornographic.
This has rather shocked the application’s creator, Andrew Shu who told venturebeat.com: “I got 2 emails from the Google Play Store telling me my apps, reddit is fun lite and pro, have been banned for sexually explicit material.”
Mr. Shu added: “I’m not sure how to go about appealing this. After all it’s true that reddit content includes NSFW (not safe for work) content. Not sure exactly why my app was singled out and the other reddit apps weren’t, though.”
Google was embroiled in a controversy some months ago when an app relating to homosexuality was deemed inappropriate. This particular app was only pulled, however, when Google received a large number of complaints. So, perhaps Google decided to get in first before someone else makes a complaint.
If this is what happened I can quite understand it. After all, Android Apps have had something of a rotten time over the last 12 to 18 months, so I wouldn’t have thought Google would want to add to its troubles.
