However, how many of us realise the hidden benefits of using Google Apps?
Perhaps the main advantage is the reliability of Google’s servers. Except for a recent outage, I think it has to be said that, in general, what Google offers its customers is first class service.
Furthermore, there isn’t the worry of your own computer hard drive being attacked by a virus or Trojan horse, and all the associated problems. What’s more, using traditional servers such as Microsoft’s Exchange to send and receive emails, there is always a chance of downtime. This isn’t a problem with Google.
Another hidden benefit is simply by using Google Apps rather than those stored on your computer, it frees up your hard drive. In a small company or organisation in particular this can be a real bonus. For instance, it is known that even a small email user can use as much as 40GB of hard drive storage.
So, the more stuff you have stored on your computer the slower it becomes. I know from personal experience that this can cause major problems.
For larger companies who run their own SMTP servers, the risk of attack by spammers is great. Using Google’s servers takes that risk away.
Finally, one other hidden benefit perhaps not realised is security. In other words, your computer hard drive is never secure even if you delete information from it. It can still be recovered by people with the knowledge.
