In fact, it appears the company has figured out that there are seven ways in which it can do this.
The first way is apparently offering something different, namely a kit that enables customers to build their own private cloud system based on IBM’s own architecture.
The second way is helping customers make greater use of an integrated public cloud system. The company recently acquired Cast Iron, a cloud-based infrastructure company. It plans to use this to help the integration process.
Third, IBM is believed to be planning more software-as-a-service initiatives (SaaS). A company spokesperson told informationweek.com: “Salesforce.com, usually regarded as the most successful cloud company to date, understood what made the sales force successful.” IBM management believe they can do the same.
Although IBM has been accused in the past of resting on its laurels while the likes of Google and (more recently) Microsoft have taken advantage of this new computing technology, IBM, nevertheless, has been working behind the scenes. As such, it believes it can make its fortune by making greater use of CloudBurst, the business hardware initiative. It also wants to make greater use of PaaS.
IBM also believes that it is important that its customers can choose the right system by offering a self-service portal rather than just a one-size-fits-all solution. Doing this will also enable the company to develop a consulting service.
