With all the hype about cloud and cloud computing, it is easy to forget that there are times when you don’t want to use it.
For instance, one of the problems with using Chrome-based devices such as the Chromebook is that the latter is dedicated for use with the internet. So, if you were hoping to be able to install software such as Microsoft’s Office then I think you will be sadly disappointed.
The Chromebook is not designed to be a storage device in the way a netbook or laptop is designed to be. Yes, I believe the Chromebook and the business-oriented version – Chromebox – do have USB facilities to attach mobile storage devices such as a pen drive, but in general, these Google machines are aimed at people on the go who wish to surf the net, and create and store documents online.
Assuming you are happy with this, then Chromebooks can be a useful investment, one of the latest being the Samsung Series 5 550. This particular device features a12.1-inch display and weighs just 3.3 lbs. It also possesses built-in Wi-Fi.
The processor is an Intel Celeron microprocessor and there is 4GB of RAM available. Critics also say that the external storage facility is just 16GB, but those who consider this to be insufficient should buy a normal laptop instead.
I assume this Chromebook is available in the UK, although I’m not sure. However, Americans are able to get one via the Verizon network.
