Cloud computing company expands in North West

A cloud computing company, iomart Group PLC recently bought out a Manchester-based enterprise called Melbourne Server Hosting.

I believe this particular business offers hosting services to some very well known businesses such as JJB Sports, PZ Cussons and the news website The Daily Mash, which publishes satirical news stories.  These are among a strong 600 customer database.

I believe the acquisition of Melbourne Server Hosting gives iomart the chance to make use of two data centres and offices situated on the Manchester Technology Park – Technopark.  Iomart also takes on 30 employees currently working for Melbourne.

Speaking with rfpconnect.com, iomart’s Chief Executive Officer, Angus MacSween said: “This is an important acquisition for us as it gives us our first physical data centre presence in the North West of England.”

He added: “It increases iomart Group’s network of fully owned and managed UK data centres to seven and puts us firmly at the heart of the growing online and media business hub that Manchester has become.”

While many of our technological developments have, in years gone by, been located in the South of England, especially around London, over recent years businesses in the North and Scotland have been benefiting from companies either starting up or relocating, or in this case taking over other established businesses.

As iomart Group PLC is a cloud computing business, I think this can only further increase the perception of cities such as Manchester and Liverpool as being technologically aware, and great places to invest.

With the current economic climate this can only be a good thing.
